I apprenticed with a tattoo artist who had been tattooing for 20 years for one year before I opened my own shop (in 1992). It took about 5 years of daily tattooing to get good enough to make almost all of the mistakes that new tattoo artists make. At ten years I felt good enough to apprentice with someone like my hero Chris Garver (although I haven't had the chance yet, and realistically probably never will) and now at 17 years I'm feeling really pleased with my work although it still makes a dramatic improvement now and then. I wouldn't choose any other medium for my main artistic outlet, but I wouldn't recommend that anyone just get some equipment and give it a go on their own. Skin is alive, it's temperamental, it varies with health and age... it just doesn't behave like any other medium out there. Your work is fantastic though, and I think if you found yourself a teacher you would excel at my kind of art. The technical part (application) is something anyone can learn, but the design and use of color is something that (in my opinion) someone just has in their soul. I think that you too have that special "it".
